Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur

October 24, 2019 at 1:58 pm

Liverpool come back to England after the back of a 4-1 win in Belgium; their first away win in the Champions League for around two years. Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, ended their recent performative rot with a 5-0 shellacking of a Red Star Belgrade side that looked utterly lost during the match. With Liverpool set to play one of their most historically exciting fixtures after a tough away game, can they get back to winning ways in the league and go back to leading the title charge?

LFC News

Liverpool looked really exciting but somewhat lopsided when they played Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita in midfield in Belgium. However, the Reds have lacked fluency in midfield from time for much of 2019 – this new midfield trio, with Fabinho screening the defence, could change that pretty soon.

The Reds come into this in otherwise imperious form, even if performances are lacking somewhat. Expect the usual front three, with one of Jordan Henderson or Gini Wijnaldum set to come into the midfield ahead of Oxlade-Chamberlain or Keita.

Tottenham News

Having finally found their feet once again, Spurs have started to see more players coming back from injury. Both Juan Foyth and Giovani Lo Celso are both fit once again, and both could take part in this game at Anfield. However, the loss of Hugo Lloris means that Spurs will need their number two to be in fine form for this one.

Expect Spurs to go with Tanguy Ndombele and Moussa Sissoko in midfield alongside Harry Winks. They’ll want to go for power and precision to try and kill off the Liverpool press.

Verdict

Liverpool win. The first chance for Spurs to get revenge for the 2019 UEFA Champions League final should end in defeat. They are improving, but a poor record at Anfield and the imperious form held by Liverpool at home means that we cannot see beyond a Liverpool win.

Liverpool vs Leicester

October 3, 2019 at 3:55 pm

In what is undoubtedly the big game of the weekend, Brendan Rodgers rocks up to Anfield with a Leicester City side capable of doing something impressive. While winning the league is unlikely, they could certainly push for a European spot – if not the UEFA Champions League.

Having watched Liverpool concede 3 at home to RB Salzburg, we’d suggest that Rodgers is licking his lips. Could he find a way to stop the winning run that the Reds have been on? Could he also put the spanner in the works regarding the title that the Anfield crowd covet so much?

Liverpool News

With Joel Matip and Alisson set to miss out again, Liverpool will be without two major starters. Xherdan Shaqiri is set to miss out, too, meaning that there should be space for the likes of Naby Keita and perhaps one of their precocious young talents to get a place on the bench. One thing is for sure, though; Jurgen Klopp sees this, rather than Salzburg, as the priority for this week.

Expect as strong a side as they can put out.

Leicester News

The Foxes could be without star turn James Maddison, with the Englishman suffering a knock. It could be a big loss for them, as he has been among the best players in the league so far. Outside of that, though, Leicester can go full strength and should put out broadly the same side who went to town on Newcastle United last weekend.

With so much depth for a side outside of Europe, Leicester should be refreshed and ready.

Verdict

Liverpool to win an absolute barn-burner. Both teams are scoring but also conceding, so we could see both teams scoring at least one. The games at Anfield between the two teams have often been belters since the Foxes came back up; we expect this one to add to that growing collection of classic matches.

Cost of Starting XI

Money isn’t everything, as demonstrated by the recent newly promoted Norwich 3 – 2 victory again last seasons title winners Manchester City.

Burnley vs Liverpool

Burnley vs Liverpool They say that if you want to win a Premier League title, you need to get used to winning at the hard away grounds. While Burnley have progressed from being the roughhouse outfit they were a season or two ago, they still have plenty to bother even the top sides. Liverpool arrive at Turf Moore knowing they’ve known won back-to-back games here in exciting fashion. Can they make it three in a row?

Burnley News

The Lancashire outfit will be happy to know that – outside of Steven Defour and Robbie Brady – they are fully fit. We can expect to see the Clarets introduce a few players to the fixture then, with a fully fit squad to pick from.

A 3-1 loss in the Carabao Cup was a minor surprise, but a rotated squad should mean they have enough in the tank for this one. They got a solid 1-1 draw away to Wolves, so expect Burnley to do as they have done so far; play it strong and fast, and get the recently-prolific Ashley Barnes involved in the game as much as they can.

Liverpool News

There’s not much to worry about for Liverpool – apart from missing arguably the best goalkeeper in the world. Alison was essential in victory here last year, and his miss will be massive for the Reds. However, with Adrian deputising, they have an interesting – if not 100% reliable – alternative.

In terms of injuries, it’s expected that Naby Keita will miss out again, while Nathaniel Clyne is out for the long-term. Dejan Lovren is expected to complete a move to Serie A, so he’s note expected to be part of the team at all.

Verdict

Liverpool win. Just. The Reds are a bit more porous at the back than they were in the previous season, and Burnley have in Ashley Barnes the ideal striker to rough them up. However, with their attacking trio in arguably the best form they’ve been in at the start of any season, we can see them having enough goals to win what should be an exciting contest.
